Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation

Cupp proudly supports the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). Our aim is to help the OCRF to shine the spotlight on ovarian cancer, to advance vital research and to save women’s lives.

In Australia, one woman dies every 10 hours from ovarian cancer. The key to changing this statistic and giving women with ovarian cancer a better long-term outlook is early detection.

The OCRF was co-founded in 2000 by eminent gynaecologist Associate Professor Tom Jobling (Chairman) and businesswoman Ms Liz Heliotis (CEO). It is Australia’s preeminent body supporting ovarian cancer research. Of all gynaecological cancers, Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death. It is an insidious disease that often strikes without warning.

At present ovarian cancer is commonly diagnosed at the advanced stage, with only 20% to 30% of women surviving beyond five years, compared with more than 90% when the disease is detected and treated early.

OzHarvest

According to The Australia Institute, Australians throw away three million tonnes of food per year; that’s $5.2 billion worth of food waste.

At Cupp, we don’t want to be part of this problem. At the end of every day, whatever food we haven’t sold in store, Cupp donates to OzHarvest.

OzHarvest is a non-denominational charity that “rescues” excess food from restaurants, markets, wholesalers, farmers, stadiums, film and TV shoots, events, cafes and commercial outlets, and then donates it to charities in need. Food isn’t wasted and hungry people are fed.

OzHarvest was founded in Sydney in 2004 by Ronni Kahn, who worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years. Kahn refused to be part of the waste problem. With the help of pro-bono lawyers, she lobbied state governments to allow food donations from hospitality outlets to charities in need. Across Australia, OzHarvest delivers 480,000 meals per month, which is about 160 tonnes of food. Not only are hungry people fed by the donations, the charities benefit because the money they save on food can be put towards other programs and initiatives.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Red-Apple-Day-665x308-BCA-banner2(1)As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – an annual public education initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia running throughout the month of June – Cupp supports Red Apple Day.

Aussies are encouraged to support the vital work of Bowel Cancer Australia through the purchase of a $2 apple pin and apple themed fundraisers.

Bowel cancer is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer, and affects both men and women almost equally. Seventy-seven people die every week from the disease, and one in 12 of us will receive a bowel cancer diagnosis during our lifetime.
